Diets – Everything You Need to Know
What is the first thing you think of when you hear the word “diet”? If you’re like most people, you think of eating less or only eating certain types of food.
That thought is actually pretty normal in cultures where overeating and obesity are commonplace. But it’s not true! Diets involve more than just restrictive, selective eating.
What Is a Diet?
The technical definition of the word diet is “the sum of food consumed by a person”. In other words, what you eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and in-between is your diet.
Different diets can be used to produce different results. If you want to lose weight or feel healthier, you should eat low-calorie foods; foods that burn fat; or healthy, nutrient-rich foods. Most people don’t want to gain fat weight or feel unhealthy, but they fill their diet with processed, high-calorie, high-carb foods that make these results unavoidable.
Choosing Diets That Improves Your Health
Keeping up with nutritional information and diet research can take as much time as a part-time job. The rules and results are constantly changing or updating. However, there are a few things that stay constant: fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are good for your body. They can help you lose weight; increase your energy levels; keep your brain sharp; and help you feel healthier.
Fruits & Vegetables
Some of the best fruits are blueberries, avocados, apples, bananas, tomatoes, strawberries, blackberries, and cantaloupe. These are low in calories and high in vitamins and antioxidants.
The vegetables you should be eating are leafy greens, asparagus, broccoli, celery, zucchini, hot peppers, and cucumbers. When you eat these vegetables raw, they send a large amount of fiber through your system. This cleanses your body, improves digestion, and increases metabolism. Fiber is just one of the nutrients that healthy, organic vegetables are loaded with.
How many fruits and vegetables should you eat every day? The amount varies based on your age, fitness goals, and activities levels. You can find some good recommendations by clicking here.
Whole Grains
Almost everyone has heard of whole grains, but most people don’t know what they are. Whole grains are unrefined and haven’t had their bran and germ removed. They are a better source of nutrients like fiber, selenium, potassium, and magnesium than refined or enriched grains.
Some of the best whole grains are brown rice, whole wheat, buckwheat, oats, quinoa, and wheatberries.
Most of the time, you don’t eat grains by themselves. If they come in pasta, bread, or cereals; follow the serving size recommendation. Most people don’t have any trouble eating large amounts of grain every day. But they don’t always eat the right grains. You can improve your health, or lose weight, by eating the recommended dose of whole grains every day.
Friend or Enemy?
The diet you choose to eat can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Which one do you want? If you want your diet to help you stay fit and healthy; you need to fill it with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
Don’t buy into the idea that diets only involve eating weird foods or nothing at all. It’s not true. Diets are the tools that you can use to eat delicious food every day and get healthier and slimmer in the process.
